Witton Albion Women 2 Winsford Town Ladies 0. (Match Abandoned).
Witton's Women's top of the table clash against Winsford Town Ladies at the U Lock It Stadium on Sunday afternoon was spoilt by atrocious weather conditions.
The game was meant to be a tremendous occasion and was rightly given the build up it merited due to the excellent form of both teams.
Crowds turned out in their numbers and in anticipation of an entertaining encounter but we're left disappointed as the relentless weather conditions led to the game being abandoned at half time.
In the first half, Witton were dominant and adapted to the conditions much better than their opponents and took the lead just after the half hour mark as striker Jennifer Thompson netted from Aimee Gibson's cross.
Winsford had a couple of shots but Albion goalkeeper Tracy Bolton was largely untroubled and Witton doubled their lead right on half time through Aimee Gibson.
The teams left the pitch for the interval and the match referee delayed the restart by upto 20 minutes to allow the ground staff time to get to work on the pitch, but despite their best endeavours, the continuous rain had the final say and the match was abandoned.
The game will likely be rescheduled for another date but the positive for Witton Albion was the turnout estimated to be between 150-200 and the Social Club would have been delighted with that.
Witton are next in action next Sunday when they travel to Frodsham Town Women in a league game to be played at Helsby High School with a 4pm kick off.
