MACK IS BACK
Witton Albion in the Community and the Bedspace Trust have formally launched a long-term partnership aimed at reducing youth homelessness across Cheshire West and Chester. Announcing the project at Witton Albion’s home game against Congleton, the two organisations plan to combine supported accommodation, mental health support, sports fitness, and job training for vulnerable young people aged 16 to 25.
The Core Pillars of the Partnership
The project will use the facilities at Witton Albion’s stadium, together with the wide range of specialist services provided by Bedspace, to build a foundation for independent living through four connected pillars:
- Supported Accommodation: Safe, stable housing providing a secure base for young people leaving care.
- Mental Health Support: In-house counselling, peer support groups, and mental health in sport workshops to build psychological resilience.
- Fitness Through Sport: Schools-based multi-sports coaching, fit clubs, children’s healthy eating workshops, and disability football.
- Practical Skills Training: Hands-on vocational workshops and job placement schemes to secure long-term financial independence.
Project Goals and Impact
By combining these pillars, the project provides holistic care where stable housing enables consistent job training and physical fitness directly improves mental health. Based entirely in the local area, the initiative aims to prevent future cycles of homelessness before they start, saving significant emergency care costs. While the project is in its early stages of development, organizers hope to secure the funding needed to deliver these local benefits while supporting the long-term sustainability of Witton Albion Football Club. Return of Jon Macken
As a first step, after a series of positive discussions, Jon Macken has agreed to be appointed in several key roles that will play an important part in shaping the future of the project.
Wellness and Wellbeing Ambassador for the Bedspace Trust
Jon’s primary role will be as Wellness and Wellbeing Ambassador for the Bedspace Trust, supporting the exciting new Bedspace Community Stadium project. Working alongside Bedspace and its ongoing commitment to community engagement, Jon will help drive initiatives focused on wellbeing, inclusion and community development throughout the Northwich and wider Cheshire area.
Community Liaison Officer for Witton Albion in the Community
In addition, Jon has accepted the position of Community Liaison Officer with the charitable arm of Witton Albion Football Club. During his previous spell with the club, Jon’s work alongside Alan Jackson was widely recognised for its positive impact and contribution to strengthening the club’s connection with the local community. By combining this role with his ambassadorial position, Jon will help deliver Witton Albion’s long-term vision of being a truly community-focused club.
Director and Board Member of Witton Albion Football Club Limited
As part of his return, Jon will also join the Board of Directors of Witton Albion Football Club. While remaining closely aligned to the club’s community objectives, Jon will oversee the club’s commercial operations and focus on growing the club’s fanbase and matchday engagement, helping to develop new opportunities that support the continued progression and sustainability of Witton Albion FC.
Jon’s appointment across these three important roles demonstrates the joint ambition, vision and commitment of the Bedspace Trust and Witton Albion to building a stronger future for the region’s young people both within the local community and throughout the wider Cheshire area.
Welcome home, Jon.Â
