Match Report: A Night of Character, Passion and Heartbreak

What a night.

From the outset, we expected a difficult opening period, and that proved to be the case. The opposition started strongly, putting us under pressure and finding a way into the game. However, we weathered that early storm and gradually began to impose ourselves.

We started to latch onto our men, press the ball higher up the pitch and win possession in dangerous areas. That pressure ultimately led to our opening goal, finished superbly and ruthlessly by Josh, who showed great composure to put us ahead.

From there, we managed the remainder of the first half extremely well, limiting their opportunities and going into the break with a deserved lead.

The second half, however, started in a completely different fashion.

We initially crumbled under pressure and conceded twice in quick succession to find ourselves 2–1 down.

But the response was outstanding.

A change of shape — a managerial masterclass, by the way — completely shifted the momentum of the game. We began to dominate possession, press aggressively, win the ball higher up the pitch and play with the freedom and intensity we know this group possesses.

That pressure led to the equaliser.

From a throw-in, Noah Lawrie received the ball, swivelled brilliantly and produced a finish that the famous Jim Lawrie will probably be trying to analyse for months to come!

And we weren’t finished.

Minutes later, Jayden Rose escaped his midfielder before calmly slotting the ball into the bottom corner. The scenes that followed were unforgettable. The emotion, passion and togetherness within the group were there for everyone to see.

But, of course, football wasn’t finished with us.

Was it a foul? Did the light affect the situation? Whatever the circumstances, we had two opportunities to deal with the ball defensively and clear it into oblivion. We didn’t, and ultimately the game went to penalties.

The penalties did now provide fruitful however and Witton bow out. 

But what cannot be questioned is the effort, desire, character and passion shown by this group. To go 2–1 down, change the momentum of the game and fight our way back into a position to win it speaks volumes about the mentality within the team.

There will be disappointment. There will be frustration. But there should also be enormous pride.
