Match preview – Atherton Collieries

Following two trips on the road that produced different results, Witton now face two home games against teams that are in the top half of the table and in good form.

Starting with Atherton Collieries on Saturday afternoon in a Northern Premier League West Division fixture.

Under the guidance of experienced manager Michael Clegg, Colls have performed well this season and are unbeaten in the league since August.

They go into the game in eighth place in the table following a run of five wins and a draw from their last six league outings.

A number of new additions to the squad this season from Wythenshawe Town, have certainly had a big impact and appear to have improved the team.

Witton will be pleased to have secured the points in a dramatic game at Stafford Rangers on Tuesday night, recent games have really tested the nerves of everyone connected with the club.

One positive for everyone is that the goals have been shared about a bit in recent games.

Freddy Garbutt has hit something of a lean spell in recent games, but fellow strikers Joe Duckworth and Tom Hoyle have come to the fore.

Changes in the defence and a new face in Morgan Sutton in goal due to Cameron Terry’s injury, have disrupted the defensive part of the game in some ways as they get accustomed to each other’s play but signs have been positive in many aspects.

Witton will be looking to follow Tuesday’s success at Stafford, a place they hadn’t won for eight years with a positive performance against Atherton but it will not be an easy test.

Recent meetings between the two clubs have seen two wins apiece and a draw from the last five games.

Atherton Collieries last visit to the U Lock It Stadium was on the final day of last season, where they secured the points in a 3-1 win but Witton will be hoping that isn’t repeated this time around.

Kick off at the U Lock It Stadium is 3pm.
